The Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) has asked parents of students during this long holiday period to prevent them from engaging in bad habits and wandering, but rather to take care of them and instill good upbringing in them, both young and old.
It has been almost two weeks since the holidays began for primary and secondary school students. Rwanda’s Minister of Education, Joseph Nsengimana, has urged students from kindergarten to secondary school to avoid wandering around. He stressed that parents and guardians should help them avoid bad habits during these holidays. He said: “We encourage parents to take care of their students who are at home during these months, so that they can contribute to their families.”
He assured that there is a program that MINEDUC has put in place to ensure that children are not distracted during the holidays. He said: “Forget about sitting, and then they will return next year to start school in a fun way.”
The students told the media that this is the time to return to classes and avoid bad habits. Mpano Nina Enice said: “We continue to return to classes as necessary to improve our knowledge, to help our fellow children. Wandering has many consequences because it can cause a child to drop out of school.”
Murekatete Margeurite, a mother whose children are in school during the holidays, said: “To prevent children from being distracted, we help them return to classes, and play different games, so that they do not get into bad habits.” The principal of one of the schools, Rukundo Viateur, told the media that they have organized different games for the children, including martial arts such as karate, and they plan to continue with the academic improvement program.
